Acc to Howard R. Bowen:-
Social responsibility refers to the obligations to peruse those policies, to make those decisions or to follow those lines of action which are desirable in terms of the objectives & values of our society.
Acc. to George A. Steiner:-
In the real sense, the assumption of social responsibilities implies recognition and understanding of the aspirations of the society & determination to contribute to its achievement.

Business should assume social responsibility implies that businessmen must consider wider public interest while taking decisions & actions relating to business. They should work not merely for profits, but should attempt to fulfill the legitimate demands of all those interest groups that have a stake in the business.
The society originates, sustains & manages the affairs of the business; as such it is obligatory on the business to conduct its affairs in the interest of society. Need For Social Responsibility of Business-:
(a) Long Term Interest Of Business-
Business being a part of society must spend a portion of profits to improve social conditions. Improvement of social conditions creates an environment for long run prosperity of business e.g. taking steps to control water, air, noise pollution.
(b) Justification for existance and growth-
The basic purpose of business is to earn profits through services to society. So the prosperity and growth of business is possible only through contineous services to society.
(c) Avoidance of Govt. Regulations-
A business enterprise can avoid the need for govt. regulation if it voluntarily decides to discharge social obligation. This helps to reduce the need for new law.
(d) Moral Justification/ Availability of resources-
Business enterprise should discharge social obligations since it depends on society-
.for physical resources
.for human resources
.for funds
.for disposal of goods & services
.for common facilities like roads, water etc.
These resources can be effectively used for solving social problems.
(e) Better environment for business-
Social responsibility improves the quality of life, resulting in higher standard of living and thus business gets a better community to conduct business. Better Labour, better customers, better society and so better opportunities for business.
(f) Contribution to social problems-
Some of the social problems have been created by business lile pollution, corruption, discrimination, unsafe work place etc. Therefore, it is the moral obligation of business to get involved in solving these problems instead of expecting others to deal with them.

Ans 2.Social obligation of a business is different from legal obligation.
Legal obligation is fulfilled by mere compliance with the provisions of the law.
Social responsibility is broader than that. It involves voluntary action by business for the benefit of the society.
It is based on the assumption that what is good for the society is also good for the business...
